Smoking and Impotence

Impotence is a condition in which men do not have the proper erection and also fail to sustain the erection for a longer period. It is a severe condition where men feel frustrated and dejected. There are many causes like physical and psychological aspects that lead to impotency. Well, smoking is one of the causes that lead to impotency. Various studies have shown that smoking adversely affects the sex drive.

The penis gets good erection and the erection lasts for a long time once there is a good flow of blood into the penile region. Smoking is known to lessen the flow of blood, which leads to impotency. Cigarettes contain nicotine, which is responsible for the blocking of arteries.

Nitric oxide is very important for healthy blood vessels. The nitric acid helps in the relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, which helps in the smooth flow of blood. Smoking lowers the production of Nitric Oxide, thus decreasing the flow of blood.

Smoking also impairs the valve mechanism which stores the blood in the penis. Smoking is also known to reduce the amount of ejaculation, impair sperm mobility, lower sperm count and lead to abnormal sperm shape. Once the nicotine stimulates the brain, it leads to the contraction of the tissues in the penis. This will result in the decreased blood flow in the region.

Though there are many pills and drugs available in the market for impotency, a smoker is advised to quit the habit if he wants to have a perfect and sustained erection.
